Embracing the Darkness: Yule Wisdom for Modern Leaders

The holidays aren't always cheerful. Between family pressures, year-end stress, and today's uncertain world, this season can feel overwhelming. Yet ancient Yule traditions offer unexpected guidance for modern leaders navigating darkness—both literal and metaphorical. Let’s explore how solstice wisdom can transform your leadership approach, especially when the path ahead feels unclear.

6 Solstice Leadership Principles

1. Reflection & Pause

- Even amid chaos, how might you create space to review the year? What worked? What didn’t? The darkest night invites the deepest introspection.

- You might consider scheduling 30 quiet minutes before the year ends to journal three lessons from your hardest moments this year.

- Last year during this time, I had several difficult things happen right near the end of 2024. My father passed away, I had some difficult political upsets, and my best friend was murdered in December of 2024. So entering into this year, I came in with a heavy heart and spirit. Come April, I knew I needed to create something to get me out of my funk. I created a “Joy Journal” that helped me create a ritual of reflecting on the parts of my life that bring joy, happiness, and fulfillment.

2. Renewal & Reset

- The sun's rebirth symbolizes fresh starts. What if you didn’t carry everything into the new year? What might you release that no longer serves you?

- You might think about writing down one habit or mindset you’ll leave behind. Have you ever considered a personal ritual like burning or shredding the paper to signify this release?

3. Resilience & Hope

- Ancient fires lit against winter darkness weren't just practical—they were promises. In what ways can your presence be the light your team needs most?

  • Have you considered inviting your team, friends or family to share what they are hopeful or excited about for this coming year? This could create a powerful space for connection and inspiration.

  • This past year I had the chance to create some unique in-person experiences. My friend is writing a book, so I helped to create “Literary Salons” to bring people together to discuss concepts and provide feedback. There was such great feedback from these that in 2026, I want to intentionally create one important off-line experience each month that invokes, connection, sharing, and deepening relationships.

4. Community & Connection

- Isolation often amplifies during the holidays. How can you create a sense of belonging for those who may feel alone? Remember, your acknowledgment matters more than offering perfect solutions.

- You might reach out to three colleagues who seem withdrawn. A simple message like, "Thinking of you during this season. How are you really doing?" can make a difference.

5. Commitment & Oaths

- Norse tradition included making vows during Yule—promises to oneself and the community. What will you commit to, even when it feels challenging?

- Consider choosing one leadership value to uphold no matter what next year brings. Writing it as a personal oath and revisiting it monthly can reinforce your commitment.

6. Sustainable Vision

- Seeds rest underground in winter, gathering strength. What if you embraced rest as preparation for emergence?

- You might think about blocking "strategic rest" time in January—no guilt involved. Nature teaches us that restoration precedes transformation.

“True leadership involves knowing when to pass the torch, rest, and trust others. The solstice teaches us that darkness isn't failure—it's part of the cycle. You don't have to carry the light alone.” — Unknown*
