Finding Joy in Leadership: A Legacy of Laughter from Catherine O'Hara

Given Humor is on of our Core Values, it would be remiss if we didn't take the time to honor the comedy legend, Catherine O'Hara, whom we lost last week. We define humor as

"Laughter, fun, wit, and enjoyment of our own humanity and that of others."

Have you ever laughed so hard you thought you might pee your pants? Or felt that lump in your throat, knowing you were about to sob ugly tears? Imagine flipping that feeling—sobbing one moment, then suddenly laughing uncontrollably.

There are people in life who have the magic to impact us on all the levels. Sometimes, they are family. Sometimes, they are friends. Sometimes, they are artists so gifted that you forget, they are not your family or friends- they just feel like they are. They occupy a space worthy of their craft. They take up space in your mind, body and soul. Because they really are magic.

Catherine O’Hara was such an artist. She brought so much magic, love, laughter, ache, heartbreak, joy, and full on quirkiness to everything she touched, including my life. I never knew her or met her, and yet, I feel so connected to her light, generosity, and her spirit.

By now, we’ve all likely seen the headlines, the tribute’s, the honor’s. All so deserved. All so filled with joy, love and remembrance for this amazing artist who graced us with her gifts. Her ability to bring such depth, silliness, and joy to everything she touched, I am so grateful to have been a witness to such magic in my lifetime.

It has actually given me the space, time, and energy to reflect on the power of humor in our leadership. Our leadership in all aspects of our lives: personal, professional, political.

Joy & Fun play vital roles in building resilience within teams. Laughter can help individuals, teams, and organizations cope with stress and uncertainty. It reminds me of when in “Best in Show”, revealing the underbelly of Dog Show’s, that right as her character Cookie is about to trot out their terrier (God Loves a Terrier), she falls and stumbles over something? Nothing? And then she gets up and tries to walk/hobble around only to know- she’s going to have to sit this one out. High stakes- high humor.

Humor is not just a tool for entertainment but a vital component of effective leadership and relationships.Embrace humor in your daily interactions and to remember the joyous moments that individuals like Catherine O’Hara brought into the world.

She will forever be ours. RIP Catherine. Thanks for all the love and laughter!
