My Mom was a _itch: A Halloween Tribute

As October 31 approaches, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant spirit of my mother, who embraced Halloween with unrelenting joy. Each year, she transformed into a Witch, complete with long, whimsical fingernails and a playful glint in her eye. For her, Halloween was not merely a holiday; it was an expression of creativity, fun, and the magic of life. It was also her birthday.

This year, as we celebrate her birthday, I am reminded of the lessons she imparted - lessons that continue to guide me in a world that can often feel overwhelming. One of her favorite sayings was,

"Life is going to life you; who you be in the face of circumstances is completely up to you."

This resonates deeply, especially now. It reminds me that while we can’t control the challenges we face, we can choose how we respond to them. My mother faced life's trials with courage and grace, teaching me that resilience is rooted in our choices.

Another phrase she often shared was,

"No one can pee for you."

At first, it made me wince, but its message was clear: we must take responsibility for our lives and decisions. She believed in self-reliance and the importance of standing tall on our own two feet. This lesson is especially poignant today as I navigate my path, striving to honor her legacy while carving out my own.

Another profound insight she offered was,

"You are a product of the conversations you are having."

This wasn't just about spoken words; it encompassed the thoughts we entertain, the media we consume, and the people we choose to engage with. She believed that the environment of our minds, shaped by these conversations—be they positive or negative—profoundly influences our mindset and ultimately creates our reality. It's a powerful reminder to curate our intellectual and social diet with intention.

In the spirit of Halloween, I think of the masks we wear and the roles we play. My mother encouraged authenticity; she taught me that it’s okay to embrace our true selves, even if that means being a little quirky or unconventional. She found joy in the playful side of life, reminding me to celebrate the little things and to find laughter even in the darkest times.

As I prepare to honor her on this special day, I want to celebrate not just her love for Halloween but the vibrant spirit she brought to every moment. I will light a candle in her memory, perhaps don a witch’s hat, and share stories of her incredible life with family and friends. I hope to inspire others to embrace their unique paths and to remember that while life may present challenges, we hold the power to shape our destinies.

This October 31st, as I celebrate my mother’s birthday, I will carry her spirit with me—her laughter, her tenacity, and her unwavering belief in justice and compassion. May we all be inspired to live boldly, just as she did, and to remember that in the face of life’s uncertainties, our choices define us. Happy birthday, Mom. Your spirit lives on in every brave step I take.
