What Nelson Mandela Can Teach Us About Living Bigger Than Our Circumstances.
International Nelson Mandela Day – July 18

Updated: Sep 26, 2025

Have you ever wondered how Nelson Mandela managed to stay hopeful and kind—despite spending 27 years in prison and fighting for freedom and justice? I think about that a lot, especially because I’ve faced my own moments of challenge (anyone else?). Last week, I was overwhelmed at work, the sun was beaming through my office window and making me feel hot, sweaty and uncomfortable. I had gotten quite a few “no’s” or “thanks, but no thanks” responses. I was feeling like I just couldn’t catch a break. It was a tough day—one of those “seriously, why me?” days. But then I remembered my late mother’s best quote: “Life will always life you. Who you be in the face of circumstances is completely up to you.”

That moment—when I took a deep breath, stepped back, and reminded myself that I had a choice—changed everything. I chose to respond differently. I chose purpose, patience, and kindness. And I realized, Mandela’s approach isn’t just for leaders or saints. It’s for all of us. Every day, we make the choice of who we want to be in the face of whatever life throws our way.

How do you find your way… even when life gets tough? Mandela’s unwavering sense of purpose kept him going. Imagine that—knowing your “why,” even when the road is rocky. Today, what’s your “why”? Maybe it’s to be a little kinder, show up more fully, or simply to get through your day. Whatever it is, holding onto that can help you bounce back faster than you might expect.

Emotions threaten to take over—what’s your response? We all have moments when feelings take the wheel. Mandela was a master at choosing his response—not suppressing feelings, but responding thoughtfully. Let’s be honest—no one’s perfect. But next time your temper’s simmering, try pausing—breathe, step back, and ask, “What’s really happening here?” Sometimes, patience and a little humor can turn a frustrating moment into a connection or a smile.

What’s your secret weapon? Your superpower? For Mandela, it was his hope. Not the naive kind, but trust that change is possible—even in the darkest times. Today, can you find a tiny spark of hope? Maybe in a setback or just in the belief that things can improve? Sometimes, a small shift in outlook can transform your entire day.

Mandela understood the power of humor and empathy. He knew that behind every opponent was a person, just like him. He used humility and humor to connect deeply—even in difficult conversations. Think about this: what’s one silly or kind thing that made you smile recently? A little laugh or a kind word might just brighten someone’s day—and yours, too.

27 years in prison. Fighting for freedom and justice…HOW? Courage in small acts makes a huge difference.. Courage doesn’t mean you’re fearless; it means you do what’s right, even when it’s hard. Mandela’s courage was in living his values—even when it wasn’t easy. Today, what’s one small act of bravery you can do? Maybe it’s really listening, making a decision you’ve avoided, or reaching out for help. Every step counts. Mandela focused on serving others. His big vision for justice started with small acts. So, what’s your big picture? Maybe it’s a healthier lifestyle, better relationships, or a more compassionate community. What’s one thing you can do today toward that?

A little nudge for your week:

What if every challenge was an opportunity—an opportunity to pause, breathe, smile, or believe things can get better? Because, honestly—they can.

Here’s the simple challenge:

Right now, pause and ask yourself, “What’s one small step I can take today that connects me to my purpose, kindness, or courage?” Every day is a new chance to live bigger, be more compassionate, and make a positive difference.

Nelson Mandela’s life was about hope, resilience, and faith in the goodness of people. Those qualities aren’t just in him—they’re in all of us, waiting to be realized. So today, what will you do to carry that hope forward?
