This simple, yet profound statement reminds us that no matter the external circumstances or locations we seek, the essence of who we are follows us. It speaks to the idea that our personal growth and leadership development are not merely products of the environments we inhabit but are fundamentally rooted in our own self-awareness and actions.
My late mother used to always say, “In any relationship that isn’t working, there is one common denominator- YOU are in it.”
In the journey of leadership, it's tempting to believe that a new role, a different team, or a more prestigious title will bring about the desired change we seek. However, real transformation begins within. Each of us carry our strengths, weaknesses, biases, and experiences with us as we move through life’s unfolding. Leadership growth work requires us to confront these elements honestly and courageously.

Leadership growth work requires us to confront these elements honestly and courageously. To truly lead others we must first learn to lead ourselves. This involves:
1. Self-Reflection: Taking the time to understand our values, motivations, and behaviors is crucial. Reflection helps us recognize patterns that may hinder our progression and the growth of those we lead.
2. Emotional Intelligence: Developing the ability to understand and manage our emotions, as well as empathize with others, is foundational in leadership. It allows us to connect authentically and foster trust in our relationships.
3. Continuous Learning: Leadership is not a destination but a lifelong journey. Embracing a mindset of continuous learning helps us adapt to new challenges and enhances our ability to guide others.
4. Asking for Perspective: Actively seeking feedback helps us gain others observations on our leadership style and effectiveness. It opens the door to growth opportunities that we might not recognize on our own.
5. Authenticity: Being true to ourselves allows us to lead with integrity. Authentic leaders inspire others by modeling vulnerability and transparency, creating a culture where honesty and growth are valued.
Ultimately, the importance of doing our own leadership growth work cannot be overstated. As we strive for external success, let us remember that the journey of self-discovery and improvement is what truly defines our leadership. Wherever we go, our growth will shape our impact, influencing not just our own path but the paths of those we lead. The responsibility lies with us to cultivate the leaders we aspire to be, ensuring that wherever we go, we are happy with who we are, how we show up, and the impact we are making.
